1. Traditional design-build-test process
This is very typical process before CAE technologies are well adapted into design process. Almost no CAE simulation is down in traditional development process so the building time and test is very long, cost is very high. Also because of TTM limit, many concepts can not be validated before product lunch, which causes many reliability and quality issues.
2. Digital Engineering process
Many companys are using or building this process. With the development of CAE technologies, before the prototypes are built, simulation is used to validate some of the product targets.
In a certain level, digital engineering process reduct the TTM and problems after product lunch. But this process does not seperate concept design with detail design completely. The origincal geometry is very detailed and complicated, which makes the changes very difficult. Also most of the simulations are 3D analysis at component level, which can not solve the system issue at very beginning. It is still down to top design.
3. SE/ALD process
SE/ALD is a top to down design process. It separates the concept design with detail design totally, which shift the traditional test verification to upfront system modeling simulation. By using product target setting and cascading, system models are created at different level and validated by using baseline or competitors’ product. Those models then can be used to do design optimization to achieve targets before detail design starts.
